The prep for a barium enema may be the use of laxatives or enemas to clean the bowel. On the day of the test, you will be asked to strip and don a hospital gown, open in the back. A technician will have you lie on an x-ray table and will take a preliminary picture to be sure you are cleaned out. Assuming you are, the technician will then lubricate your bottom with his or her gloved finger. He or she will then insert the enema nozzle or tubing into your bottom. If it is a nozzle, it will have an enlarged tip to prevent expulsion during the exam, or if tubing is used, it will have an inflatable tip that will be filled with air after insertion, again, to prevent premature expulsion. The doctor will then ask the tech to begin the flow of barium into the bottom and colon. The flow will be observed by the doctor on a fluoroscope. Periodically throughout the exam, the technician will have you change positions on the table to aid the flow of the barium. He or she may also massage the abdomen at time to aid the flow. Several pictures will be taken during the procedure to diagnose any potential problems. After the fluoroscopy is completed, the tech will lower the enema bag to the floor to allow most of the barium to empty from your bottom and colon. He or she will then deflate the balloon in your bottom and remove the tubing. You will be helped to a restroom where you will try to evacuate any remaining barium. This will be followed by another x-ray to check that most of the barium has been evacuated. You will be instructed to drink lots of water and to administer a tap water enema upon your return home to clear out any residual barium. If barium is left in your bottom or colon, it can harden and cause a blockage that may have to be treated in the ER,so it is important to follow these instructions to avoid this problem. Hope this answers any questions you may have about the procedure.
